Secure Foundations Training was founded by Rebecca Slater and Ruth Whittaker. Friends for nearly 30 years, we’ve combined our complementary skills to provide an intuitive, research-led, child-first training service that empowers staff and protects children more effectively.

About Ruth
Our Senior Training Consultant, Ruth leads the development and delivery of our training programs, ensuring that they meet the highest standards of quality and relevance. A teacher for 21 years, she brings a deep understanding of instructional design principles and utilises innovative teaching methods when designing learning experiences that cater effectively for our clients’ specific needs.
Ruth’s specialisms
In addition to her role at Secure Foundations, Ruth is actively involved in the local education community. She serves as a committee member of the Educational Professionals Association, where she contributes expertise and insights to help enhance the quality of education and training in the North Yorkshire area.
Through her knowledge and commitment to continuous improvement, Ruth plays a key role in helping our clients define a safeguarding process that reflects best practice throughout their organisation.

About Rebecca
As co-founder of Secure Foundations, Rebecca brings a passion for safeguarding and a commitment to the wellbeing and protection of children.
An independent social work assessor and expert witness with over 20 years’ experience, Rebecca has been involved in over 300 cases as an instructed expert witness, preparing that same number of reports for Family Court Proceedings. Rebecca has held various social work positions including social worker, advanced practitioner, team manager, child protection chair, deputy manager and senior assessor at a Local Authority Children’s Centre.
Rebecca’s specialisms
Rebecca brings a very particular skillset to Secure Foundations, including:
Direct work with children
Working with young parents
Parents with learning difficulties
Parents with mental health issues
Parents with substance misuse issues
Issues of domestic abuse
Issues of sexual abuse and harmful sexual behaviour
Rebecca has also worked as a Specialist Local Authority trainer facilitating training for team managers, social workers and foster carers on a wide range of topics, including reflective practice, promoting resilience, and working with learning difficulties and domestic abuse.
She has provided specialist training on child protection and domestic abuse at Goldsmiths University.
Rebecca is a trustee for a charity specialising in domestic abuse and sexual violence, where she chairs the safeguarding committee.
